Aromatherapy massage in Naivasha: what it is, how it works, what to expect
The session doesn’t begin when you lie down on the table. It begins about three minutes earlier, when the therapist sets four or five small glass bottles in front of you and asks a simple question.
What does your body need today?
You lift each bottle, breathe slowly, and something in you responds before your mind catches up: this one, or that one, or the combination of both. The therapist nods. They already know what they’ll do with that information. The blend is prepared. The session is already underway.
Aromatherapy massage is Creative Essential Spa’s most requested treatment in Naivasha, and this ritual, the oil selection, is the reason most clients say it’s unlike any massage they’ve had before. This guide explains everything you need to know before you book: what the treatment actually involves, the science behind why it works, the blends available at CES, and what to expect from your first session to the last stroke.
What is aromatherapy massage?
Aromatherapy massage is a full-body therapeutic treatment that combines professional massage technique with the application of diluted essential oils chosen specifically for the client’s needs at that session.
It is not a Swedish massage with a scented candle in the corner. The essential oils are applied directly to the skin in a carrier oil: sweet almond, jojoba, or fractionated coconut oil, making them active therapeutic agents, not ambient fragrance. At Creative Essential Spa in Naivasha, every aromatherapy session is personalised from the first moment: the oil blend is selected in direct consultation with the client, based on their physical state, mood, and intention for the session.
The result is a treatment that works on two levels simultaneously — physical tension through therapeutic touch and emotional and neurological state through the essential oils. No other treatment on the CES menu does both.
How does aromatherapy massage work? The science, simply explained

The therapeutic effects of aromatherapy massage travel to the body through two distinct pathways.
Pathway 1 — the olfactory system and the limbic brain
When essential oil molecules are inhaled, they travel through the nasal passage to the olfactory receptors, which connect directly to the limbic system, the part of the brain that regulates emotion, memory, stress response, and autonomic nervous system function.
The olfactory system is the only one of the five senses that connects directly to the limbic system without first passing through the thalamus. This is why a particular scent can shift a mood in seconds, before conscious thought is involved. Lavender, for example, has been shown in multiple studies to activate GABA receptors — the same neurological pathway that anti-anxiety medications target, but gently, transiently, and without pharmacological side effects. Frankincense produces a grounding, meditative effect through a similar route. Peppermint briefly stimulates the sympathetic nervous system before its menthol compounds produce a cooling, analgesic response in the muscles.
Pathway 2 — transdermal absorption
Essential oil molecules are small enough to penetrate the skin barrier and enter systemic circulation in diluted form. This is why professional aromatherapy uses oils diluted in a carrier; the dilution is required both for safe absorption and to prevent skin sensitivity. The combination of massage strokes improving local blood circulation and the oil molecules entering the tissue creates a systemic therapeutic effect, not merely a local one.
Professional-grade essential oils, applied by trained hands at therapeutic concentration, produce measurably different outcomes from home diffusing. Both the purity of the oil and the method of application matter.
The essential oil blends at Creative Essential Spa
At the start of every aromatherapy session at CES, the therapist presents the available blends. You smell each one. You describe what you’re drawn to or simply what you’re carrying that day. The therapist recommends or confirms the right choice. This conversation takes approximately three minutes. It is also the most important three minutes of the session.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): The most versatile and most requested blend at CES. Lavender activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reduces circulating cortisol, and supports melatonin production — making it the most effective oil for stress, general tension, and sleep disruption. The recommended starting point for first-timers. Best for: stress, insomnia, anxiety, general tension, first-time clients
Eucalyptus and Peppermint (Eucalyptus globulus + Mentha piperita): A cooling, energising combination that opens the respiratory system and delivers an analgesic effect to fatigued muscles. The peppermint menthol creates a sensation of cold on the skin that relieves muscle heat from physical exertion. Eucalyptus supports circulation and reduces localised inflammation. Best for: post-hike recovery, muscle soreness after Hell’s Gate or lake activities, congestion, physical fatigue
Rose and Jasmine (Rosa damascena + Jasminum officinale): A warm, deeply floral blend associated with emotional warmth and mood elevation. These two oils together produce the most romantic sensory profile in the CES collection and are the standard choice for couples’ sessions. Rose has a long history of use in emotional regulation and gentle skin nourishment. Best for: couples sessions, anniversaries, emotional stress, celebratory occasions
Frankincense (Boswellia sacra): The most grounding oil in the collection. Frankincense produces a deep, resinous calm — the kind associated with meditation and sustained quiet rather than immediate relaxation. It is the choice for clients who describe themselves as being unable to switch off, or who are moving through a sustained period of pressure. Best for: burnout, deep or chronic stress, those who find relaxation difficult, evening sessions
Sweet Orange and Bergamot (Citrus sinensis + Citrus bergamia): A bright, citrus-forward blend that lifts mood without stimulating the nervous system to alertness. Bergamot is widely studied for its anxiolytic properties — it reduces anxiety while simultaneously supporting energy levels, making this the only CES blend that genuinely does both. Best for: low mood, emotional flatness, anxiety combined with fatigue, morning sessions
Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis): The gentlest oil in the collection. Chamomile is deeply anti-inflammatory and calming, with particular effectiveness for sensitive skin and high states of anxiety. It is the most commonly recommended blend for evening sessions and for clients who find more stimulating oils overwhelming. Best for: sensitive skin, high anxiety, evening sessions, gentle nervous system support
Not sure which blend to choose? The therapist will guide you at the start of your session. Many clients simply describe how they feel, and the right oil becomes obvious within the first minute of the conversation.
What to expect: the full session, step by step

Before
You arrive and are welcomed into the CES treatment space. The therapist conducts a brief consultation on any health considerations, areas to focus on or avoid, and pressure preferences. The oil selection follows: the blends are presented, the conversation happens, and the choice is made.
The therapist prepares the room while you change: the table is warmed, the chosen oils are blended into the carrier at the correct therapeutic dilution, and the ambient temperature is set. At Creative Essential Spa, the welcome traditionally includes herbal tea (or after service) — a detail mentioned in multiple client reviews and one of the small signals that the session has been thought about before you arrived.
During
The session typically begins face-down; however, at Creative Essential Spa, we leave a surprise of change with a mini meditation by facing up after the choice of oils. The therapist applies the oil blend with warm hands and begins with long, slow effleurage strokes — the fundamental aromatherapy technique that distributes the oil evenly while beginning the warming and relaxation of the tissue.
The stroke pattern adapts to the blend chosen. Peppermint and eucalyptus blends are applied with slightly faster, more stimulating strokes to activate the cooling and analgesic properties of the menthol. Lavender and frankincense blends are applied slowly, with sustained pressure and long holds, to deepen the parasympathetic response the oils are already producing through inhalation.
The session moves from front body to back body, with full draping throughout. Pressure adjusts continuously based on verbal and non-verbal feedback. Communication from the client is welcomed, not an interruption.
Notice that the scent of the oil changes as it warms on the skin. The top notes, the first bright volatile compounds dissipate within the first fifteen minutes, giving way to the deeper, richer base notes. This is normal and is itself part of the treatment: the scent evolution mirrors the deepening of the relaxation state.
Most clients fall asleep before the halfway point. This is the intended effect, not an inconvenience.
After
The therapist leaves the room while you take time to return. There is no rush. The table will not be needed for several minutes.
Some oil remains on the skin and continues to work for several hours after the session ends. You are advised not to shower for at least two hours. The post-session transdermal absorption period is when some of the systemic effects of the oils are most active.
Water or herbal tea of your choice is offered. Light-headedness on sitting up is normal in a deeply relaxed client; take a moment. Stand when you are ready.
The full therapeutic effect of an aromatherapy session builds over the following 24 to 48 hours as the oil compounds continue their work.
Who should book an aromatherapy massage?

Aromatherapy massage is the right treatment at Creative Essential Spa if you are carrying stress that has settled into your body as much as your mind; if you cannot fully relax even when you’re resting; if you want the treatment to address your emotional and neurological state alongside your physical tension; or if you have had Swedish massage before and want to understand what the difference actually feels like.
It is particularly effective after a demanding day physically, emotionally, or both. Many Naivasha visitors book aromatherapy after Hell’s Gate or a full day on the lake and find the eucalyptus-peppermint blend addresses the muscle fatigue while the inhalation component deals with the mental overstimulation of a long day outdoors.
Consider deep tissue massage instead if your primary concern is specific chronic muscle tension, a repetitive strain, or post-athletic recovery requiring sustained targeted pressure.
Consider Swedish massage instead if you want gentle full-body relaxation without the oil ritual, and you’re not specifically looking for mood or nervous system effects.
Not sure? The consultation at the start of every CES session is precisely for this question. Describe how you feel. The therapist will tell you what they recommend.

Frequently asked questions
What is aromatherapy massage and what does it do?
Aromatherapy massage is a full-body treatment that combines therapeutic massage technique with plant-derived essential oils chosen for the client’s specific needs. It works through two pathways: the physical effects of massage on muscles and circulation, and the pharmacological effects of the essential oils via the olfactory system and transdermal absorption. At Creative Essential Spa in Naivasha, it is the most requested treatment for stress relief, nervous system reset, and post-activity recovery.
How is aromatherapy massage different from Swedish massage?
Swedish massage uses oil primarily as a medium for massage strokes. Aromatherapy massage uses specifically selected essential oil blends as active therapeutic agents, adding a second layer of effect on mood, the limbic system, and emotional state that Swedish massage does not provide. At Creative Essential Spa, every aromatherapy session also includes a personalised oil selection ritual at the start, making it a uniquely tailored experience.
What essential oils are used in aromatherapy massage?
At Creative Essential Spa in Naivasha, the aromatherapy collection includes lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint, rose and jasmine, frankincense, sweet orange and bergamot, and chamomile. Each blend is chosen for a specific therapeutic purpose. The therapist presents all options at the start of each session and recommends the right blend based on the client’s state, symptoms, and intention.
Is aromatherapy massage good for stress and anxiety?
Yes. Aromatherapy massage is Creative Essential Spa’s most targeted treatment for stress and anxiety. Lavender and frankincense essential oils act directly on the limbic system via the olfactory pathway, producing measurable calming effects on the nervous system alongside the physical relaxation of the massage itself. Most clients report a significant shift in anxiety state within the first twenty minutes of the session.
What should I expect during an aromatherapy massage?
The session begins with an oil selection ritual, where you choose your essential oil blend in consultation with the therapist. The full-body massage uses long, slow strokes to distribute the oil and work through tension throughout the body. Most clients fall asleep before the halfway point. After the session, some oil remains on the skin and continues working; avoid showering for at least two hours for maximum therapeutic effect.
How long does an aromatherapy massage last?
Aromatherapy massage at Creative Essential Spa is available in 60-minute and 90-minute sessions. The 90-minute session is recommended for first-timers and for those experiencing significant stress, as it allows more time in the deeper relaxation state the treatment produces.
Is aromatherapy massage safe during pregnancy?
Some essential oils are contraindicated during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, please inform the therapist when booking. Creative Essential Spa offers a dedicated Mum-To-Be massage that uses a pregnancy-safe essential oil blend and specialist positioning. Contact us via WhatsApp on +254 723 234 922 for advice specific to your stage of pregnancy.
Your first aromatherapy session is likely to become your regular one
Most clients tell us this afterward. They came for a massage and found something they hadn’t expected — a specific quality of stillness that they hadn’t felt in a long time, and that they now know is available whenever they need it.
The oils change. The blend is always chosen for that particular day. That is precisely the point.
